The People and Places we will visit:
Jim Gerrish

Jim Gerrish, the leading expert in the study and practice of Management-Intensive Grazing will be hosting us for a 1 1/2 day practical Masterclass plus a 1/2 day visit with Glenn Elzinga of Alderspring Ranch, the range herding operation.

With over 30 years of hands-on practical grazing management in commercial cattle and sheep production, as well as a long research career at the University of Missouri, Jim provides a unique perspective on bringing the art and science of grazing management together in a coherent package.

Steve Cote

Steve Cote will join us at Jim Gerrish Masterclass. Steve has been a soil and range conservationist for USDA for 27 years where he taught stockmanship and range management.  Most of what he learned about stock handling came from Bud and Eunice Williams and since Bud has passed away, he retired early to teach stockmanship.
He has had the rare opportunity to work with range grazing associations, feedlot and dairy producers and small pasture livestock people all over the country with USDA and has worked uncountable numbers of animals in these settings. With 20 years of experience and teaching, he sticks to his experiences with what Bud and Eunice (now just Eunice) teach, because what they teach comes straight from the animals.

Roland Kroos

Roland Kroos will join us at the J Bar L Ranch and the Flying D Ranch

Roland has been providing on-site assistance as well as teaching Holistic Management since 1986. He trained extensively with Allan Savory, founder of Holistic Management, in 1985 and is a recognized Certified Educator with Holistic Management International.

In the last 32 years, Roland has helped hundreds of ranches throughout the western United States and Canada become healthier and more productive. He has witnessed the striking potential for positive change that can take place on landscapes and within operations with a little commitment to better planning and managing whole systems.

J Bar L Ranch
Nestled within the Centennial Valley, the J Bar L Ranch encompasses 20,000 acres of deeded and leased land.

That’s 5,000 acres more than the entire island of Manhattan. A holistically-managed cattle ranch, the J Bar L is dedicated to continuing the valley's historic ranching tradition while stewarding the Centennial’s stunning and complex rangeland ecosystem. Depending on the cattle’s grazing rotations, you may or may not see the cattle during your stay. However, you are sure to witness some of the numerous wildlife that call this valley home.

Our Vision is to:

  • CULTIVATE experiences of deep connection--to the land, the animals and themselves.
  • ENHANCE the understanding and conservation of wild landscapes through opportunities to witness the relationship between wild and domestic animals.
  • SHARE the story of the “New Ranch”--where ranching and conservation meet--and bring the next generation into the story by sharing what we are learning and proud of.
  • Create safe spaces where people can experience personal growth.
We will be staying 2 Nights on this Amazing Ranch

Cooper Hibbard

Cooper Hibbard along with Whit and Dawn will be hosting our visit.  Our visit to the Sieben Livestock Company in 2018 was something special for everyone in the group.

In 1864, Henry Sieben traveled on foot and by wagon from Illinois to Montana Territory.  From freighting to cattle and sheep speculation, Henry was an entrepreneur.  By the end of his life he had amassed two majestic ranches.  His two daughters, Berneice and Margaret, each inherited a ranch and the legacy was launched.

Four subsequent generations have maintained the ranch at Adel, south of Cascade, Montana. Each generation has expanded the ranch through acquisitions or leases. After a long history as a sheep ranch, Cooper Hibbard now manages primarily cattle at the Adel ranch.

Chase and Cooper Hibbard work together closely to ensure family legacy continues and thrives.  While careers take fifth generation family members in a variety of directions, commitment is strong to ensure Sieben Live Stock Co is a many generation family business.

FLYING D RANCH

The Flying D ranch is a spectacular property located in southwest Montana. The property operates as a working ranch managed for the production of bison and wildlife.

A 113,613-acre ranch, the Flying D ranges from steep, wooded land on the south end, to rolling meadows in the central portion, to high-rolling bench topography on the north end. A good habitat for a variety of native wildlife, the Flying D is home to established populations of mule deer, white-tailed deer, Rocky Mountain elk, Rocky Mountain gray wolf, Shiras moose, pronghorn antelope, black bear, mountain lions and badgers, among others. In addition to these species, golden and bald eagle sightings are made throughout most of the year.

Wayne Fahsholtz

Wayne will be hosting us the visit the Scott Family Ranch, a vast ranch on the Montana / Wyoming Border. We also were privileged to have Wayne host us in 2018 at Padlock and the Scott Family Ranch.

Wayne was the first non-family CEO of the Padlock. Realizing the cattle industry is in a state of change, the strategic plan focuses on risk reduction; overhead cost controls, a reasonable return for ownership and a good quality of life for the stakeholders. Individual animal identification, ranch-wide grazing systems and alliances are examples of new steps that have been taken

Ranching For Profit Conference ~ Sheridan, Wyoming. 1 -3 August.

Creating a Succession Plan That Works for Everyone

The most difficult challenges we face as business owners are exposed in succession planning. What is one generation retiring to? Is the next generation competent? How will you treat on and off-ranch heirs fairly? What if there is no next generation? The Ranching For Generations conference will tackle these and other challenges head on. If you don’t have a succession plan, this is your chance to build one. If you have a plan, this is your chance to test and improve it.

The generational theme of the conference is particularly poignant for Ranch Management Consultants because Dave and Kathy Pratt are transitioning ownership and management of RMC to RFP Instructor Dallas Mount and his wife Dixie. Join us as we celebrate the new generation of management that will continue RMC’s mission: Healthy land, happy families and profitable businesses. Your land, your family, your business!

Gabe Brown

Gabe Brown and his family will host our visit where he will share his journey and show us his landscape.
We will visit Menooken farm in the afternoon.

We believe that faith, family and working with the natural resources that God has provided allows us a meaningful life.  We enjoy using these resources to regenerate landscapes for a sustainable future.

Our ranch is located just east of Bismarck, ND.  Shelly and I purchased the ranch from Shelly’s parents in 1991 and have grown the operation to 5000 acres of owned and leased land.  Son, Paul, returned to the ranch after graduation from North Dakota State University and became a partner in the operation.  Daughter, Kelly, lives and works in Fargo, ND and returns home to help whenever possible.

Dr Jonathon Lundgren

A Research and Demonstration Farm in Regenerative Agriculture where Dr Jonathan Lundgren will share his in depth knowledge on Regen Ag.

We combine cutting edge science with hands on experience to remove barriers that hinder the adoption of regenerative agriculture. This style of food production prioritizes promoting soil health and biodiversity on farms while producing nutrient dense food profitably.

Doug Ferguson

Doug Ferguson is near Beatrice NB

Doug is a Cattleman 1st and foremost and will share how he uses both the bud Williams Stockmanship and Marketing to his advantage. We will meet at the Marysville Sale Barn to experience a cattle sale the American way before visiting Doug on his cattle pastures.

Dale Strickler

DALE STRICKLER ~ Agronomist, Rancher, Author

I am Dale Strickler, an agronomist for Green Cover Seed,a Kansas rancher, and author of the book The Drought Resilient Farm. The Drought Resilient Farm is a compilation of techniques for increasing the ability of soil to capture more rainfall, hold more moisture, and increasing the ability of plants to extract more moisture from the soil. A second section discusses methods of providing feed and water to pastured livestock during drought. His book also contains a plan for creation of a more moisture efficient system of agriculture in the semi-arid plains and steppe regions.

Gail Fuller

Gail Fuller ~ In search of a better way to farm, producer looks to mimic nature.
We visited Gail in 2018 and he blew us away with how he is sowing up to 100 cover species, plus he shared so much about the link human health has with soil health.

“The most important thing I could tell my neighbours who are doing conventional tillage is that we’ve learned a better way,” says Gail Fuller. “When we till, even with minimum till, we’re still eroding the soil and still killing the microbial life in the soil.”

The Emporia, Kansas, farmer is convinced he’s found a better way to farm, one that’s in nature’s image, rebuilding and regenerating soil that’s been degraded over the past several decades. “We’ve got to get our soil back to the state it was in when buffalo roamed the prairies,” he says. “In order to do that we’ve got to rebuild organic matter, we’ve got to improve water infiltration, we’ve got to get soils back into the balance where they supply their own fertility, and we’ve got to rebuild microbial communities.”

Darrin Williams

Darrin Williams Cover Cropping.

He was once a home builder — then he became a soil builder.Darin Williams, Waverly, Kan., is also a vested no-till grower and business entrepreneur. These skills came to him because of his love for farming, a dream he has built since the age of 16.

When he was a junior in high school, Darins’s father purchased a 60-acre farm and planted wheat and soybeans. For 2 years, Darin worked ground and planted traditional crops alongside his father before college took him away from the farm.

Eunice Williams

Eunice Williams is the wife of Bud Williams and spent almost every day of her life working with Bud.
She has a wealth of knowledge, especially when it comes to Stockmanship.
Joining us will be Tina and Richard as well as a few other graduates, to discuss Marketing and Stockmanship.
